Improvement imperatives for iRex - some ideas

iRex is currently facing financial problems. I'm the owner of an iRex Digital Reader (DR1000) and I really hope iRex is going to survive those difficulties.

The DR1000S isn't as flashy as the iPad of course, but it is an excellent (but not perfect) reading device. You can't completely compare ePaper with flat screen technology, it wouldn't be fair.

Irex claims they missed a sales window in the US, nevertheless I believe iRex has some deeper issues to look at. If they continue I believe the following topics should be addressed:

Pricing. ePaper is quiet expensive on the iRex. Facing the iPad at around 500€, iRex can't keep its prices so high. The cost structure of their eReaders needs to be carefully analyzed because some costs have to be cut down. It's a matter of survival on the market. It could mean for iRex to diversify the product portfolio to find some volume cash cows, why not with a good tablet....
Solution Thinking : Rather than just selling a just product, iRex should rather push complete solutions where the eReader is a piece of the value chain. Business Solutions need to be further developed. Those Business Solutions should be independant of the eReader and allow to push eReading on other devices like the iPad.
End User support : If you walk around the iRex Forum, you'll read many people have questions and remarks. They are not always addressed in a good way. Customers have paid a high price for their eReaders and they feel abandoned.
Firmware : iRex has to face it, their Linux based firmware is rich in functionality but is too slow. One would need to take the risk to start it again from scratch or in collaboration with some other vendor (HP Palm OS, Android...). My usage of Xournal or FBReader on my iRex shows me some applications can behave reasonably fast. The challenge is to separate the processing of information from the display. It's not easy but it needs to be tackled.

I wish iRex the best and I hope they can face those difficult times.

Ebauche de dessin pour la couverture de l'eBook "eReading Reference Architecture"

Pour l'instant je travaille sur l'écriture d'un livre (électronique) qui concerne l'architecture des systèmes utilisant la lecture électronique. Dans ce livre, des scénarios de lecture électronique sont décrits à l'aide d'une technique d'Architecture d'Entreprise appelée Archimate. L’Architecture de Référence est composée de 4 tiers.

Afin de faire une belle couverture pour le livre, je travaille avec Paul Leroy, artiste peintre. Voici un dessin qui préfigure la peinture qui sera en couverture de l'eBook.

eBook iPad Vs livre papier

L'utilisation de l'iPad pour lire des livres (eBooks) me fait parfois penser à cette histoire:

Quand la NASA a commencé à envoyer
pour la première fois des astronautes dans l'espace, elle s'est rendue
compte que les stylos à bille ne pouvaient fonctionner en l'absence de
gravité.
Les américains ont donc investi 1 million de dollars et ont
mené 2 ans de recherche qui ont aboutit en un stylo permettant d'écrire
dans l'espace, à l'envers, sur presque toutes les surfaces et à des
températures pouvant aller de -0° C et jusqu'à plus de 300° C.

Confrontés
au même problème, les russes ont choisi d'utiliser...le crayon à papier
!

Pronostics Coupe du Monde 2010

Voici nos pronostics pour la coupe du monde de foot.

Nous pouvons choisir 3 équipes favorites. Thomas peut en choisr 4.

Les choix de Thomas:

Argentine : "Parceque il y a Messi et pleins de joueurs de l'Inter de Milan".
Brésil : "C'est une bonne équipe, il y a plein de bon joueurs : Kaka, Robinho et surtout Maicon"
France : "Car ce sont nos voisins alors il remplacent la Belgique dans mon coeur. J'adore Ribéri et Anelka."
Angleterre : "Surtout pour Wayne Rooney"

Les choix de Mireille:

Espagne : "J'ai beaucoup aimé mon city trip a Madrid"
Italie : "Je suis pesuadée que ce sont les meilleurs comme la dernière fois.
Mexique : "Parceque ils ont quand même résussi a battre l'Italie en match de test"

Mireille rajoute "Mes choix sont aussi stratégiques car leur groupes ne sont pas trop
forts"."Je ne prend pas le Brésil et l'Argentine car Thomas les as déjà sélectionnés".

Les choix de J-F:

Pay-Bas : "Comme la Belgique n'est pas qualifiée je prends deux pays vosins et amis".
Côte d'Ivoire : "Puisque la coupe se joue en Afrique, je me devais de supporter une équipe Africaine".
France : "J'écoute Europe 1 tous les jours, ce qui me rend très proche de l'équipe de France car ils en parlent pendant des heures tous les soirs".
