I was today in a "Personal Improvement" course. During the course we learned about the JoHari window. It's a model that allows you to become more open by better stating your expectations towards someone else (openess) and by requesting feedback (self-knowledge).
See here : http://kevan.org/johari A test is available, but for this test, you need to compare what you think of yourself with what I think of myself. If you want to help me do the test, just drop me an email and I'll give your the link to my own JoHari window. In return, I will do the test for you, if you wish. Respectueusement, Votre humble cliente. Last edited on Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 20:51:08 pm. This book is rendered using a technology that I have seen for the second time and that I find very interesting : FSI-Viewer. Those guys found a way to put flyers in a browser. It's much better than the traditional pdf (which is never in Landscape and always in Portrait, obliging you to scroll). Have a look here : http://download.playmobil.com/public/eCS/Store/befr/egypt_booklet/index.html I like it ! Portal or RIAs ? Two days ago, with a colleague, we had an interesting discussion around the future of Entreprise Portals. Today in a SOA, Services are consumed by consumers like Fat Clients (Lotus Notes for instance) or Thin Clients (via a Portal). The arrival of Web2.0 technologies like Rich Internet Applications (RIA) like Google Calendar, Google Docs ect will puzzle this architecture. At IBM we already have two examples with Project Zero and Websphere Business Spaces. A Portal product is than no more necessary for consuming and exposing services in a browser. What becomes than the role of a Portal in the SOA ? Probably it becomes a provisionning and security platform for RIAs and Mashups. At the security level, it means offering an Identity and Access Management platform. At the provisionning level it becomes a place where you can search for a mashup, configure it and use it immediately. To show you an example of what a website/portal can become with RIAs, you can compare my server side "Portal" http://www.jfdeclercq.com/ with a "RIA Portal" version of it : http://www.netvibes.com/jfdeclercq If you start using Netvibes you will understand how you can mix content on your own page using Widgets. Those widgets contain their own application logic (Gmail, Google Notes, Flickr, Twitter, Facebook....). Netvibes doesn't own the widget's code like a traditional Websphere Portal would. Therefore the future of Traditional Portals like Websphere Portal is to provision those kind of Widgets in a secure way. Last week we (Mireille and I) went to the Vlerick Marketing Alumni Event : How Social are you ? The evening was about a marketing approach on the Social Networks and Online Communities. Robin Wauters started with an Introduction on Social Networks. I didn't learn much on that introduction (maybe I know already too much) except that the groups that exist on different networks like Facebook are a target for Marketeers. So creating or using social networks is now the objective of good marketeers. Pieter Goiris (CEO Boondoggle) showed us how the Heineken Music site to illustrate how brands try to engage in a give & take relationship with online communities. By the way this website is a wonderful Mashup (Stoemp) ! Web2.0 is also about involving the users to make the content. It's the case of Sensoa, a Flemish website where people can ask all questions about Sex. Luc Colson of 4C Consulting explained us that in a Social Network, three kind of people are very interesting for the Marketeer : the people with most connections within a group (Let's call them "Leaders"), the people linking independant groups to each other ("Connectors") and people on the path between the two profiles ("Relays"). The "Leaders" would allow to influence the group. If the Leader has an excellent experience with your brand, others will know it. "Connectors" allow to transfer the brand experience from communities to communities. "Relays" are a way to accelerate the transfer from Community to Community (they connect the Leaders to the Connectors). Those concepts are for instance exploited in the Telecom sector to enforce operator loyalty and reduce the risk of churn. Steven Van Belleghem (Insites Consulting) gave me the best impression. He explained that Marketeers have to understand how the new technologies can impact the way branding works. Marketeers have an important challenge to learn surfing on the web2.0 advertsing wave led by FaceBook, Google... There is a change of paradigm going on. Before the Marketing equation was the following : Advertising ... Brand ... Sales Today the chain is the following : Brand ... Advertising ... Conversations. The goal of the marketeer is to land in the conversation zone. Consumers need to talk about the product, advertsing is not enough anymore...This session gave me a better idea on how marketeers think about Web2.0. I see it as a great way to discuss with people and a great technology at the same time. I see the promise of the semantic web. They see segments, focus groups, communities, conversations, advertising... Note 1 : For the Vlerick Alumni people, that kind of event is the best rather than just have a beer, let's also have some content. Note 2 : From web experts websites, I'm not always impressed : 1) I hate the Boondoggle's website (try searching Heineken in it...), and 2) how is it possible to have an URL like http://www.4cconsulting.com/Templates/home.aspx?id=32&langType=1033 when you know the following principle : "Good URLs never Change" Photos of the Pecha Kucha Brussels Vol 5 The quality of my pictures isn't good but it's just to remind some of the bla bla... The party was not as good as the last one but there was more content : the presentation of the new Samsung Omnia. The Samsung Omnia is a great MulltiMedia device (Music, Video, 5 MegaPixel Camera, GPS, MS Office Integration, Push Email...). It also has a touchscreen like the iPhone. If I had to choose between the iPhone and the Omnia, I think I would choose the Omnia because it's more compact and Windows Mobile 6 would allow me to install more custom applications. However I still have a phone with a keyboard (Samsung SGH I600) and I'm not convinced about the Touch screen yet. ![]() A terrace in Belgium Watching the Champion's League tonight Yesterday when watching the Champion's league, I found very funny that when eventually the best french players are performant, they score against a French club. In typical client/server computing, servers control the flow of data and information into and out of client computers. Essentially, the server runs the show. With peer-to-peer (P2P) computing, the server is removed from the equation, allowing computers -- and more specifically, their users -- to share files and other data directly, without going through a central server. Last edited on Friday, July 13, 2007 at 12:43:51 pm. Yesterday (Friday Nov 30th 2007), went to Antwerp at Noxx (http://www.noxxantwerp.be) for a DJ Tiesto (http://www.tiesto.com) concert. ConsI think I will NEVER go to a Tiesto concert again : It was way too expensive (35?/pers) for the experience that we had. The place was too much overcrowded and it was impossible to move or to find a confortable place where you could just stand to listen to the excellent music. With our managerial point of view, we found that Noxx could be much better managed on the operational side. A lot of machines slow down the process at the bar, at the locker room... We also had to queue 25 minutes in the rain and cold before we could get in. ProOn the positive side, Tiesto's music is really GREAT. We had to wait until 02:30 for Tiesto to start the concert. Even if the other DJ before Tiesto was very good, once Tiesto started we could feel that the music had jumped into a higher level, a master level. You have to check Tiesto's music on this Podcast : http://www.radio538.nl/clublife/podcast.xml Also as it was overcrowded in the main room, we moved away and we enjoyed dancing in the 2 other rooms where other DJs were mixing. They were excellent as well. So we had fun but it was not optimal for enjoying Tiesto's music and therefore we have the feeling that the value for money was too low. Linked In Question : Does Capitalism work for the majority of the people?http://www.linkedin.com/answers/personal-finance/wealth-management/PFI_WMG/115441-1903201 The accumulation and control of capital by individuals and corporations is the dominant economic system. But the majority of people don't own capital, only debt. We all know capitalism works for the wealthier minority, but does it work for the majority? My AnswerIf you read the book of Josef E. Stiglitz, The Roaring Nineties, you will understand that Capitalism will work only with the right regulations. Regulations by the governement must allow the re-distribution of richness. If you don't tax the capital, than it tends to accumulate. If you let the situation evolve like this all the capital can go to the same people and those people will eventually become the new kings of the world. They will own everything, and everybody who has debt will be a their service. Without regulations the winner takes it all. Too much regulation is not good as well : It's called Communism. After you have understood this you agree to pay up to 55% taxes as I do in Belgium because you understand that it's the price to your freedom. You also understand that we should reduce debt because its the a kind of new form of slavery... Between getting all your salary free of taxes and have everything taken by the government, the Belgian Solution is the compromise... The only problem is that only labour is taxed like this, not capital.... With the Gloabilization of the economy we run a high risk because no government has the sovereignty over the whole world to regulate the capital flows. So capitalism works ! With right regulations ! At the university I had an Political-Economy course and the teacher told us the following story. During WW2, a man comes in a village with a big case full of cash. He asks the owner of a restaurant to keep the money until the end of the war. After the war, the mysterious man doesn't come to get the money. After several years the owner of the restaurant decides to borrow a part of the money to extend his restaurant. By doing so he pays some people of the village for the construction, then he can attract more customers and can reimburse the borrowed money. The people in the construction sector can buy new tools and make bigger constructions, so they can go more often to the restaurant. Eventually the mysterious man comes back to the restaurant and doesn't ask for his money. The owner tells him he still has the case but the stranger doesn't mind : "This money is false" !! The conclusion is : money is good when it changes hands ! So go and spend all your money : you will enjoy life and do a good action. (But don't give it to the bank !)
It's purpose is to provide theoretical and practical training in general or senior functional management. The content of MBA courses is wide-ranging and is focused at the knowledge and skills that are essential for managers in today's global marketplace. They provide an understanding of the operation of businesses, including the use of people and capital, effective internal processes, the impact of external forces and, very recently for an increasing number of courses, the role of the Internet and electronic commerce. MBA degrees are either awarded by universities or by specialised business schools. There are a growing number of business schools that developed as a result of business initiatives. Several groups of companies in Europe have founded excellent schools at which MBA education is specially designed to their own specifications. Here are some pictures of the Balloon trip we did in August this summer above the "Vlaamse Ardennen".
It was our first time in an Air Balloon. After helping to fill the balloon with ambient air, warm air was blown for take off. Take off is quiet quick and at that moment you think "My god, what am I doing here ?". But after 2 minutes you figure out it's perfectly working and also very quiet : there is no apparent wind. You can than start to enjoy. The pilot of Balloon Heli did - I think -a very good landing, we had only two chocs to stop. Once again Thank You to Maggie, Dimi and Julie who offered us this trip as a wedding gift. Click on the photo below to see the Album on Picasaweb.

There is something I find weird on Google's site.
I often use Google Maps. If I type http://www.google.be/maps/, than Google returns a 404 error page because the page doesn't exist. The correct page is http://www.google.be/maps without the '/'. But wait a minute, if I search for anything in Google, it seems to know what I mean : "Did you mean ?" But apparently not in the case of an hazardeous Google Maps URL on their own site... I just completed a IBM course on Architectural Thinking. Here are the best quotes :
"Every Solution to a problem introduces new problems" "At IBM, Architects must have a T-Shape" "IT Architecture is a set of decisions that you take which will cost you a lot of money if you change them afterwards" (Robin Mulkers) (In architecture,) "Good is good enough" Last edited on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at 11:21:01 am. One day I decided to quit... I quit my job, my relationship, my spirituality. .. I wanted to quit my life. I went to the woods to have one last talk with God. 'God', I said. 'Can you give me one good reason not to quit?' His answer surprised me... 'Look around', He said. 'Do you see the fern and the bamboo?' 'Yes', I replied. When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water. The fern quickly grew from the earth.. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. In the second year the Fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo. He said. 'In the third year, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In the fourth year, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed.. 'I would not quit.' He said. 'Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant. .. But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall. It had spent the five years growing roots. Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle.' He said to me. 'Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots.' 'I would not quit on the bamboo. I will never quit on you. 'Don't compare yourself to others..' He said. ?The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern ... Yet, they both make the forest beautiful.' Last edited on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 12:10:43 pm. What is an MBA? newmonday.co.uk The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a post-graduate and post-experience qualification designed for people with work experience, looking to develop as professional managers or progress in their management roles. It is also a considered a 'must have' among ambitious business consultants and investment bankers. MBA students are often looking to acquire the relevant skills, and broaden their business and commercial knowledge. Some are sponsored by their companies, others prefer to do the course independently, affording them more freedom to increase their salary afterward. Many go on to launch their own business or run successful companies, but in all cases the earning potential of graduates leaps up significantly. People study MBAs for a variety of reasons and the difference between a top-ranking business school, and a non-accredited programme can be vast. The name that comes after the title is almost more important than the MBA itself, but MBA students unanimously agree that whichever course you eventually chose it widens horizons and delivers an understanding of all the major functions of a business. The networking opportunities gained from working with other professionals on your course is also considered to be a huge advantage. Not everyone automatically qualifies to study an MBA. In Europe, especially, a tertiary education and a significant amount of work experience are a pre-requisite. You can study part-time, by correspondence, over the Internet, or full time over one or two years, but not all schools are accredited by the Association of MBAs. The length and quality of your experience, together with your personal motivation are extremely relevant in securing admission to a good business school. On Sept 11th 2008, we attended the Samsung Omnia night. ![]() Last edited on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 21:03:22 pm. Business Architecture
Last week I had a course on Business Architecture and it was fascinating.
As IT Architect, it's quiet easy to jump from IT Architecture to Business Architecture. The Service Oriented Entreprise (SOE) concepts are very close to the SOA concepts, except that instead of organizing systems and functions, it's about organizing businesses (services, products, people, processes and technology). The methodology proposed by Niels Klinkenberg results in Business Architectures which look like those of IBM's Component Business Modeling (CBM). During the course, I liked how the Growth Phases Model of Larry Greiner was used to explain that the agile business architectures of tomorrow are a network of highly entrepreneurial Business Units (called Domains) which are specialized, higly efficient (benchmarked), have to obey the corporate "Playing Rules" and have to add value to the company. This makes of Governance (Corporate, IT, HR, Financial...) a central success factor. How to govern a large company that needs to be agile ? To answer this question, you'd better first have a good idea of its Business Architecture... Last edited on Sunday, May 18, 2008 at 23:44:30 pm. Note: You are viewing an old revision of this page. I'm currently building a database of key slides and illustrations I have used during my carreer. Here is a mindmap I did for XML Days in 2002. http://jfdeclercq.blogspot.com/2007/01/xml-mind-map-dating-2002.html The purpose of this mindmap was to explain the explosion of technologies around XML and why people could think that XML is simple but in fact it is not. From this spaghetti, I made a kind of lasagne, that I called XEE (XML Entreprise Edition, like J2EE is Java Entreprise Edition). Here was my picth in 2002: Software AG's XEE: XML Enterprise Edition XML has now clearly evolved to the enterprise standard for application integration. If the principles of using XML are simple, its integration in a company's infrastructure can become a real software challenge. In this presentation we will present our vision of the XML software infrastructure that can solve a lot of these challenges. This infrastructure allows to:
The solution was an XML Enabled Service Oriented Infrastructure... which I believe is still the best integration pattern today. Last edited on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 9:27:20 am. To add a new page to Wiki, all you have to do is come up with a meaningful title, capitalize all the words and ?StringThemTogetherLikeThis. Wiki automagically recognizes it as a hyperlink. Alternatively, you can put anything into ?square brackets. Then you can go ahead and ?ClickTheQuestionMark at the end of your new hyperlink, and the Wiki will give you a window for making the new page. If you wish to add documents with complex markup to the Wiki, you might be better off providing a URL to it than trying to add the text of the document here, like so: PhpWiki project homepage: http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/ The Wiki does not support HTML tags (see TextFormattingRules). <tags>They will just render like text.</tags> Wiki is meant to be as simple as possible to encourage use. Note that there is a feature that your system administrator can enable to allow embedded HTML, but there are security risks involved. Last edited on Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 12:40:24 pm. About phpwiki: URLsA special type of URL is available for making links to perform administrative and other special functions in PhpWiki. Here is a brief description of how they work. The basic syntax of a phpwiki: URL is phpwiki:pagename?query-args If pagename is omitted it defaults to the current page. Query-args should be a set of parameters in standard HTTP GET format. The "action=x" parameter should almost always be given. It can be one of browse, info, diff, search, edit, zip, dumpserial, loadserial, remove, lock, unlock, login, logout, setprefs or save. The default action is browse. Some of the actions accept other parameters.
Writing Magic Links in Wiki PagesA magic link looks like: [ text | phpwiki-url ] The "text |" is optional but usually recommended. If given it will provide the label for the link. The phpwiki-url is a phpwiki: URL as described above. Some examples[ Edit the SandBox | phpwiki:SandBox?action=edit ] will generate a link which will take you directly to editing the SandBox, like so: Edit the SandBox. Other possibilites: Writing Magic Forms in Wiki PagesMagic forms are no longer supported. They have been superceded by <?plugin-form?>s (for text searches) and by the ?WikiFormPlugin (for files uploads, etc.) Last edited on Friday, September 06, 2002 at 17:58:33 pm. In Paris, this weekend we visited an exposition of Kandinsky at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Mus?e d'Orsay. A picture I took yesterday Rue de Rivoli. And an other one is 700m before the arrival, during the last round, place de la concorde. Today I have to read a lot of documents (RFPs, white papers), therefore it would be more comfortable to print them. But I feel ashamed to print documents just to read them and than throw them away. 75% of the people feel the same way (see the article from DataNews : "Vous imprimez et vous en avez honte"). Last year already I wanted to buy the iRex DR 1000s and as one can see the price has been the same for more than 6 months now. It is still 699 Euros. I'm an enthusiast about ePaper but with this level of price I doubt it will become mainstream soon. Often I say that one of my dreams is to cross a continent (like America, Central Europe or around the Mediterranean sea) by bicycle for several months. I always speak about Bastien Demange who did it last year. You'll find a summary of his journey here : http://bastiendemange.com/2009/06/08/video-cycling-siberia-in-winter-solo/ I like the Tour de France a lot. Every night I enjoy the resume on een : Tour2009. The main question this year is of course "Armstrong or Contador ?" One can think that this competition within a single team is very unhealthy. I don't think so. First, it's excellent for the team because it's excellent for the sponsors: Astana. Every day that question comes back again and again. Second, it's an excellent strategy for winning. If the Astana team mates can bring the 2 leaders safely at the top of the race when the real battle can begin, than you can let Armstrong and Contador challenge each other and let the fastest win... Plus : if one of the two leaders has a big problem, chances of winning are not lost for the team. Now I'm curious to see if what I predict will become true : will Armstrong and Contador have a big fight "? la p?dale" in the mountain ? I hope so. Last edited on Monday, August 24, 2009 at 23:07:32 pm. I think it's just great. If you add that you can use the Iliad as a Notepad (you can write also!), that you can upload PDF documents like reports, Presentations... It makes of it a great business tool. I'm really hesitating : Should I buy it ? There is an interesting package with l'Equipe for this summer. Show me the ROI"http://www.linkedin.com/answers/technology/enterprise-software/TCH_ENT/109784-642674 I have been used to tackle the ROI question a lot during my career and in fact while reading your question, suddenly, I see the light. A technology or a system doesn't have a ROI : It always costs. What matters is what you are going to do with this technology : your project. When Bernard tapie presented the first Cofidis team for the Tour de France, the best champions were in front of the press. A journalist asked : "How much does such a team cost with all these champions ?" Bernard Tapie said : "It's not how much it costs that is important. It's how much it will return to cofidis, (and believe me it's much more !)" (I'm not so sure about the wording but it's the idea... :-) ) What do you want to do with this technology ? There are 2 main cases: Case 1. The technology/system is a key enabler of your project : you can't do without it. In that case the expected revenue of your entire project should exceed the technology acquisition cost which in fact is only a portion of your entire project. So the question is how much can the project cost ? Case 2. The technology/system is a nice to have. The question is than, by adopting this technology, will the bottom line bring me more than the technological costs ? So a technology/system doesn't have an ROI by itself, it will depend on what you will do with it. Google used Web2.0 to create Gmail, a very different way to use email by searching rather than having traditional folders. The search engine was the key enabler while the Web2.0 technology was an enabler but not really a must have. But thanks to web2.0 user-friendlyness they maybe increased their number of users by let's say 5%. Those 5% represent 5% more advertising revenue. In that case, we can guess there is good ROI. Enteprise 2.0 will most probably achieve a good ROI for companies where communication boundaries should not be an obstacle to people's creativity and expression. At IBM it allows to enable "innovation that matters"... Last edited on Monday, October 08, 2007 at 20:28:07 pm. Today (20070123) I release a prototype of a SOA Repository I have designed and implemented myself. By my experience in SOA projects and being frustrated by documentig and communicating around serive design and information, I have created a small php object database prototype (see Entrypot). The purpose of this php system is to be able to enter information in a collaborative mode. My first preview is here http://soarepository.ifrance.com/setContext.php?ID=44 Some objects of the following type have been created :
The SOA Repository links to the SOA services and the SOA services are described using interfaces and methods for the moment. By doing this I have built an extensible SOA Repository that could be used a central documentation place for developers and business analysts. As a test case, I will soon publish a complete service : the COBRA naming service. Such that we can see what it gives with a real service specification. The CORBA meta-models is composed of
See BusinessServicesRepository for examples. and other struct and naming contexts. I intend to develop a xml export feature that would make it possible to generate the service XML version and afterwards to transform it to COBRA IDL using a stylesheet. But I think : "Why do we want to relaunch something that is going straight into the wall ?" "Isn't it a good time to change direction ?" So, let's relaunch the competitive machine until we crash in the same wall again. Or should I say until we blow the next bubble. In 2009, IBM's innovation will focus on a Smarter Planet. The world needs to be smarter. There are challenges : food, energy, carbon footprints, climate, economy... Some solutions will come from innovation and IT :

Will Web2.0 change our society ?The beginning or the end ?I read in Data News tha Andreas Kluth, from the economist, said to the Trends magazine that "Web2.0, after the inevitables ups and downs, will change the society". See One of the best analysis of Social Web. On the other end, according to Gartner, Blogs will start to decline in 2007 See here So what will happen ? What is Web2.0 ?Web2.0 has two aspects :
The technological aspect is not a driver for social networking, it's an enabler. As all technologies it will be replaced by an other one. (Which one is an interesting question. Most probably voice and video technologies which would allow to speed up the publishing process). The web2.0 philosophy is the basis of social networkig and is here to stay. Why would social networking stay? Why would people continue to blog ? Blogging is just "one-to-many" communicationIn order to know if blogs will decline we should carefully think about the incentives for people to blog. Why do people blog ? People blog because they want to share things with a wider audience. Blog allow they to do 1:N (one-to-many) communications. Remember some years ago, our mailboxes were full of jokes, funny images and powerpoint slideshows. A friend of mine even made jokes compilations see here (that he got on newsgroups but re-published as email because we continue to receive them by email). Distributing multi-media content by email is not convenient. All providers and companies have set limits to email - they are now released thanks to innovations like single attachment storage and the cheaper cost of storage. Blogging is a much better solution than email for one-to-many communication. So the question is : will people continue to do one-to-many communication and blog ? My answer is Yes. Will blogging change our society ?Now, if even people continue to blog, does it mean it will change our society ? I don't think so. Here are some reasons why :

High Design is a philosophy of design, as well as an enriched design approach that integrates established design skills with other disciplines in the areas of human sciences, technology and business.
The High Design Process is: People focused - to deliver solutions that are not only technologically possible but preferable, from the social, anthropological and personal point of view Multi- disciplinary - to guarantee that all points of view (people, technology and business) are taken into account.
Research based - to ensure that the results obtained are based on actual facts and to continuously expand knowledge The High Design Process is structured into 5 phases:

After a course I followed given by MoTiv (http://www.motiv.tudelft.nl/) by Ton Meijknecht and Hans van Drongelen for IBM, I would like to share some concepts and reflexions on Creativity.
The creative class The work of Richard Florida and his book 'The rise of the creative class' (note I haven't read it yet) aimed at demonstrating that a new class has emerged in today's society. "The creative class is a group of people that social scientist Dr. Richard Florida, a professor and head of the Prosperity Institute at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, believes are a key driving force for economic development of post-industrial cities in the USA." (See Wikipedia) The people of the creative class have special demands against their work environment : soft control, more independence, personal growth and development, freedom to shape the content of their own work, control of their schedules (flexibility), expression of their identities through work, able to trade job security for own autonomy. The creative class is also looking for another kind of lifestyle : individuality, self-statement, acceptance of difference, desire for rich multi-dimensional experience, pack every second - at work or leisure- full of creative stimuli and a morphing conception of time - (mixture of work and play). The creative class asks questions about what really matters in life. The thesis of Mr Florida is that the creative class is the main driver of economic growth. Do I belong to the creative class ? I have the feeling I belong to the creative class : I think I have the above characteristics. Another argument that makes me think I'm a member of the creative class is that I feel the tension that would exist between members of the creative class and the corporations. A tension starts to emerge between large corporation and the creative class. Their motivations are not compatible anymore. However the corporations need the creative class for their innovations. The result is a war for talent and a lot of talent retention programmes. But it doesn't prevent that creative people step out of the companies and create a new startup or even make management buy-outs. In one of my previous posts (Allergic to Superficiality ), I was criticized by some anonymous comment and today I understand why. The person who criticized me is certainly not someone of the Creative class. It's someone who is a Coporation's soldier and who has a lot of respect for the traditional way large companies can sometimes operate. He is attracted by the dark side of the organization's power game and has respect for people who are able to climb the matrix to the top by stepping on the other's dead bodies. Who is creative ? Everybody can be creative. Being creative requires however some conditions : you need some talent and this talent needs to be put in the right context. Talent has three different levels : skills, mastering and tolerance. We are used to identify our skills and define how well we master them (beginner, advanced, expert, master...). How to be even more creative ? By knowing why. In addition to skills and mastering, tolerance is required for the most creative ones. Firstly, If you are not able to make use of the diversity of our world by being more tolerant, you will be less creative. Secondly, tolerance also means compassion and the possibility to solve problems for others. This tolerance aspect also touches the deepest motivations of our creativity. Why do we want to be creative ? What drives us to create solutions ? Why did Einstein want to find out new rules like the relativity rule ? Creativity and Spirituality It seems that a fundamental drive (some beliefs, some spirituality) is a necessary condition for superior creativity and innovation, meaning that you will be most creative if you align your entrepreneurship with your own spirituality. I can link this to one of my previous posts around Happiness defined by Axel Khan : All creatures on this earth will be happy if they can express their true nature. "Connais-toi toi m?me"... You can only be a superior creator in the fields that match your true nature. Being creative, just as being happy requires freedom. Freedom allows to move in order to be the right man at the right place at the right moment. This is why creative people want to be independent and travel the world : they don't want to be blocked in their vision of how they can improve what matters to them. They don't want to miss the chance to maximize the impact of their creativity. Last edited on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 11:47:42 am.

(Copied from http://www.mgt.smsu.edu/mgt487/mgtissue/newstrat/metcalfe.htm) Robert Metcalfe founded 3Com Corporation and designed the Ethernet protocol for computer networks. Metcalfe's Law states that the usefulness, or utility, of a network equals the square of the number of users. The telephone is of very limited use if only you and your best friend have one. If a whole town is on the system, it becomes much more useful. If the whole world is wired, the utility of the system is phenomenal. But in the predigital age, it could take many years for Metcalfe's Law to bear fruit. It was not until 1931 that telephone companies put a dial on the instrument, finally cutting the tremendous cost of employing switchboard operators and extending the reach of the system. First, telephone use had to reach a critical mass, or number, of users. So it is with any technology. Until a critical mass of users is reached, a change in technology only affects the technology. But once critical mass is attained, social, political, and economic systems change. This is what authors Downes and Mui call the Law of Disruption. It took about 10 years for radio to reach critical mass in the U.S.; television took longer. Each of these technologies transformed family, economic, and political structures once they reached critical mass. The same is true of digital technologies. Consider the Internet. It reached critical mass in 1993, when there were roughly 2.5 million host computers on the network. By November 1997 the vast network contained an estimated 25 million host computers. With computing cost continuing to drop rapidly and this dominant computing network growing exponentially, the stage is set for a social, political, and economic revolution. Moore's Law and Metcalfe's Law are in play. To achieve a dramatic effect on commerce, though, one more piece of the puzzle is required. Firms must see a transaction cost advantage that causes them to change their strategic thinking from the models of the past. Read on. Last edited on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 14:03:19 pm. Episode 1 & 2It' now 2 times that I watch the Top Manager. http://breedband.telenet.be/var/telenet/storage/external_content/vt4/ What should I think about it after doing an MBA... First, I believe the "exercices" do not reflect the real challenges of a Top Manager. I believe a manager must be able to care more for the long term with a lot of intelligence and strategy. The exercices so far are short term (one day) and do not allow to build much experience in the domain in order to take clever decisions. I don't believe you are born "top manager". How can one judge the quality of someone when it's not in its primary domain and in one day ? But OK. "Top Manager". What's in a name ? I'm really upset by the two first decision of Rob Heyvaert to fire Wim and Xavier. For me it was clear that Koen has imposed bad ideas which turned catastrophic for the boys (Orange Juice and this complex statement over Volvo). In the first episode I was also astonished by the fact that the boys didn't realise the distance between Gent and Waregem ? How is it possible to overlook so simple constraints. The two first episodes showed how important it it to KEEP IT SIMPLE !! Something else that I don't understand : if men are eliminated ok, but then I believe the boy's team should be weacker and weaker... So the next out would be, a man again... Last edited on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 at 17:06:14 pm. Pendant mes vacances ? Bien ? vous, Thibaut Vincent Last edited on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 9:00:21 am.

(from Twitter) Yesterday (Aug 27 2009) we attended the concert of Soulsister at the Druivenfeesten. The show really exceeded my expectations. ![]() ![]() People are Philosophers today... Yesterday I uploaded a picture from my phone (via Twitter/Twitgoo) for the first time. It's a picture of the Druiven Koers. You can find it here: http://twitgoo.com/2pg6f Netlash published today "5 tips to a successfull Online Community" (Deutch). Many times I have tried to set up such communities (Bicycle Club, Work's Intranet, MBA distribution list, family, customers sites). very often those communities have died even before they were born. There is one principle that I have kept out of all those web experiences : people use the communication tools only when they have a problem and when they are looking for a solution. This is the "What's in in for me" principle : I have only recorded activities when people get an advantage out of the communication:
If you understand this "What's in it for me" principle, you understand that the web can be a very powerful tool to quickly find a solution to your problem. The range of problems is very wide : finding love, compiling Linux, buying Viagra, finding the perfect vacation, stay informed, find which WII game is cool and which one sucks... Identifying he community of people who have the same kind of problem than you can only bring you closer to the solution. This is for me the true engine of communities. I use to say to my wife (as a joke ?) "Everything always comes back to 3 letters : SEX". But in that logic that there are also 3 other letters : "EGO". And than I guess there are some things like "Right man at the right place" and "Time to Market" also applicable to Online Communities... This weekend we were in the area and Frankfurt as well as the Rhein valley. Click on the following picture to go to the album:
FYI : 97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know Well, I still have to go through the list... What is the best one according to you ? Related : http://delicious.com/jfdeclercq/soa+architecture Well, we had a very nice week at the Belgian coast on the second week of August (2009). There was a lot of sun. The Belgian coast is really great when the weather is nice. Mainly, we enjoyed some biking, the swimming pool and the beach. We also enjoyed some drinks on a terrace (especlially in Blankenberge on the pig pillows) There was also the traditional mini-golf. On monday we wanted to see the FireWorks in Ostende but there was nothing : we were told they were cancelled because of the crisis ??? Nothing is more frustrating than a canceled fireworks. On Tuesday we went for a 30Km bike tour in the country. On Wednesday we went to De Haan on the beach. On thursday we went to have a look at the Belgacom Beach Soccer but there wasn't much animation. On friday we went to Plopsaland. There wasn't too much crowd. We only found that some attractions like the fire extinction were very dirty. We have also seen the "Samson en Gert" show in French for the first time : "Fred and Sanson". It was ok but they should stop translating from Dutch to French because it's a difficult exercise. According to Leonard Koren, wabi-sabi is the most conspicuous and characteristic feature of what we think of as traditional Japanese beauty and it "occupies roughly the same position in the Japanese pantheon of aesthetic values as do the Greek ideals of beauty and perfection in the West." Wabi-sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. It is the beauty of things modest and humble. It is the beauty of things unconventional. The concepts of wabi-sabi correlate with the concepts of Zen Buddhism, as the first Japanese involved with wabi-sabi were tea masters, priests, and monks who practiced Zen. Zen Buddhism originated in India, traveled to China in the 6th century, and was first introduced in Japan around the 12th century. Zen emphasizes "direct, intuitive insight into transcendental truth beyond all intellectual conception." At the core of wabi- sabi is the importance of transcending ways of looking and thinking about things/existence.

Last edited on Saturday, October 03, 2009 at 22:29:37 pm. The Power of NowThe purpose of this book is to explain us why we suffer so much. We suffer because our brains, our thoughts, our EGO take control over our body. We constantly search in the past and imagine in the future how we could arrive here and how we will get there. This mental running train is basically preventing us to be present. There is no other moment to live than now. By always thinking about yesterday and tomorrow we forget the most important : to enjoy life right now !! Eckhart Tolle tries to learn us to "turn off our brains" or to observe our thoughts. ("Heureux les simples d'esprits" takes all its meaning here) We will find out how our thougts are limited, negative and pessimistic. Our brains (or our EGO) are in fact always caring for the worst case. The EGO also has a big difficulty to accept the world as it is. Wanting to change the reality is the aim of the ego in order to show its power. By being present, you can only accept how the world is as you are part of it and the world is part of you. The book is here on Amazon Le Pouvoir du Moment Pr?sentSource : http://www.naute.com/penserie/moment.phtml Ce livre nous pr?sente plusieurs d?fis : si nous r?ussissons ? Last monday I was in Lagaude (near Nice, France) for a visit of the IBM SOA Center of Excellence. It was very interesting. It's also a very nice environment. The goal was to brief one of our customers on several SOA and Industry Solutions. At the end of the day, we also visited the Industry Solution Center which brings deep dive into most relevant business issues through scenario based demonstrations. For example, solutions in the Consumer Products Center are presented using a scenario which is customised for you. There is a Consumer Home, Retail Store, Manufacturer/ Retail DC and HQ Office so that solutions can be seen in their proper context. ![]() You can have an overview of Lagaude it here : http://www-05.ibm.com/fr/ibmforum/lagaude/overview.html Recently I blogged about FeedJournal and Tabloid to make your own newspaper in PDF. Some basic statistical knowledge and ?feeling? is indispensable for every modern manager. In all kinds of management domains such as financial management, quality control, marketing research and operations management, concepts and techniques with a mathematical and statistical background are used. What are your projects ? ![]() Yesterday I heard someone on TV saying : "A lot of problems in our society come from the absence of projects". It's true. Nothing is more depressing than not having projects. When you don't have a perspective you don't think about your future, you only think about the past and how it was the good times. Instead, you should always look forward and catch the opportunities that the future brings. Working on projects allow you to have recognition from your peers and/or auto-satisfaction. This statement nevertheless is maybe a bit too simple :
So if the statement is true.: as human beings, we need projects. The next questions are than:
It's up to us all to select the projects which add value, respect the people and the nature. Many projects don't help us and nevertheless we contribute to them... Let's try to step out of these. Les imp?ts expliqu?s par un Ph. D. am?ricain?. assez clair?.

Last edited on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 19:52:26 pm. It's a long time that SOA has been around. My first atricles are dated jan 2003 but I had already done some work on it in 2002. Two years ago still, I was trying to convince my colleagues to put SOA on the agenda of one of our Marketing events... They told me nobody was interested in SOA... Look now, all seminars go around SOA. So for me it's very boring and "old News" to hear about "SOA","SOAP" and "Attention : SOA is not Web Service" (Even if what they actually sell is UDDIv3 and... SOAP). What's even more boring is that SOA is about Component Based Design and Reuse... It was already the same discussion at the time of CORBA... The only refreshing item in SOA is its impact on "Governance". That's new and it's a nice topic. So all providers - HP, BEA, Software AG - now have "SOA Assessments" and "SOA Governance" and "SOA Life Cycles". So today, SOA doesn't interest me anymore... The question I have is : what's after SOA ? Last edited on Tuesday, January 09, 2007 at 19:40:08 pm. "Young writers often suppose that style is a garnish for the meat of prose, a sauce by which a dull dish is made palatable. Style has no such separate entity; it is nondetachable, unfilterable. The beginner should approach style warily, realizing that it is himself he is approaching, no other; and he should begin by turning resolutely away from all devices that are popularly believed to indicate style--all mannerisms, tricks, adornments. The approach to style is by way of plainness, simplicity, orderliness, sincerity." --Strunk and White, "The Elements of Style" And thus an American textbook, typical required reading for 10th-grade English students, unknowingly extols some virtues of WabiSabi --scummings Last edited on Friday, September 06, 2002 at 17:58:31 pm.

Objectiver is a requirements analysis tool (see http://www.objectiver.com/). It allows to capture requirements for any kind of project using the KAOS method. By linking Operations elements to Projects and assigning a performance relationship to Agents, one can define the Services Containers (agents) as well as their services (operations) with Input and Output parameters represented as Entities. In the following design the CustomerLookupService performs one operation : searchCustomer having a SearchPattern and SearchString as input and a CustomerList as output. See an image here http://jfdeclercq.blogspot.com/2006/12/soa-design-with-objectiver.html The advantage of this method is to be able to derive the SOA out of the Business Requirements. This course deals with the management of this department. There are several decision-making domains that can be divided into two categories: choosing and developing the production systems, and managing the production system. The purpose of this course is to gain an insight into the principal methods used to analyse and develop production systems, to solve operational management problems and to study the interaction with other functional domains. Today I'm working on the Integration of IBM's Cryptography solutions for long term archiving in Content Management Solutions like FileNet Image Services. The idea is to encrypt confidential documents on the desktop using SFED (Secure File Encryption for Desktops) and than post them to the Document Archive. This design poses many organizational questions : What if the person who encrypted the file forgot the password ? In that case, there are two main possibilities: 1. Use a Password Store or 2. Allow for password recovery. An Administration Interface allows to recover the password. This requires, in addition to the technology, a strong real life procedure such that the password recovery tool isn't misused. In SFED, the Security Domain of the documents determines if password recovery is possible or not. What garantees that one can decrypt the document within 10 years from now ? The combination of the use of encryption standard like Encryption AES, HMAC-SHA-512 or PKCS#12 and IBM's promises to stay in Business... How to avoid that people use the same password for unrelated files ? (If this password would be revealed for a file, all the other files would be at risk) This is an organizational and security governance issue... You need to learn your end users not to put their passwords on a post-it on the workstation's desk. Security is not only technology... ?What will you do next year ?? is the main question I have to answer these days. Last Tuesday (Nov 17th 2009) I got the approval from IBM that my sabbatical leave has been approved. Therefore, in 2010, I will not go to work as usual. So, this week I met many people who have heard that I'm having a year off. Their main concern is ?What will you do ?? but also ?Will you be back in 2011 ?? . As the Black Eye Peas would sing, I have a feeling that 2010 is gonna be a good year. What will I do ? I will have 3 main objectives in 2010: 1. Business I will work on the opportunity of starting a business in the field of ePaper. Concretely, there are many activities I want to undertake around ePaper
![]() 2. Sport Together with my friend Laurent Saublens, we decided to get to the top of the Mont Ventoux by bike. I hope he didn't forget it because I want to take up the challenge. ![]() 3. Free Time For the first time in my life, for one year, I will have no agenda, no obligation. It will be an interesting experience. It might sound crazy but I want to truly understand what I will choose to do of my free time when facing an empty agenda. Here is what I believe I will do:
And I'have just been told there is an additional objective: 4. Spoil my wife who deserves it (which was actually proposed by... my wife who was reading over my shoulder. But ok. Fair enough). So, Will I come back (to IBM) ? It will mainly depend on the successful execution of my business plan. If I'm happy being an independent entrepreneur, I will probably not come back to IBM. If on the contrary I'm not happy with the experience, I could come back to work for the Large Company. I don't know yet today. No rain coming on the Buienradar (http://www.meteox.be/) so let's go for 1H Mountain Bike...

(from Twitter) Today most technological companies are faced wihth the same problem : the explosion of technologies. In the past there were maybe only 2 or 3 possible technologies for solving a specific problem. Today you have 10. For example, in the 80s most of programmers in large companies would work on the IBM Mainframe. Today, there are several populations : J2EE, Oracle, Microsoft, open source, Web... You only have to look at the agenda of next week's devoxx conference to get an idea of some recent technologies which didn't exist 10 years from now. As a result of this explosion, IT skills have to evolve. IT people have to deal with going out of their comfort zone. Here is what I identify as key skills for the future IT professionals:

After Bill Gate's keynote, an interesting debate was planned with Innovative Project or IT Managers who had innovated in their companies (Belgacom, Fortis, Borealis, FEDICT, De Lijn, Banque De Luxembourg) by applying to a Microsoft Early Adopter program. I was shocked to see ? of the attendance (about 2000 people among which a lot of IT Professionals) leaving the room as the debate was just starting. I consider this as an enormous lack or respect from those people against the top Belgian IT professionals who were present and who had a concrete and sound business case to defend. Also the Microsoft organization was really great. Respecting the speakers would have been a great return to Microsoft from those who profited from the free lunch? Response to LinkedIn question - Does somebody have the new best practices for IT organizational design?http://www.linkedin.com/answers/management/organizational-development/MGM_ODV/109785-611175 Yesterday I saw a movie where the conclusion was : "the best recipes are the ones that you invent yourself". I guess a lot of theory like ITSM or ITIL will help you to shape your organization. Today the most critical question for an IT organization is "what do I want to keep internal and what do I want to outsource ?" To answer that question, there is no standard recipe. You'll need to align your IT Plan to your Business Plan. The strategic pieces have to be remain under control. If I were an IT manager I would build a Diamond Structure. I would focus my IT on 3 layers : 1/4 management (Project managers, Support managers...), 1/2 Architects and Analysts (the gatekeepers of your IT) and 1/4 some developers. The developers allowing to control the work that is produced by sub-contractors. (They would not be the rowers of the rowing boat race story ;-)) It would be a diamond because it's a hierarchical pyramid without a bottom base. This structure is very agile because you can source the bottom of the pyramid while keeping your managers and architects (they are not bound to a specific technology). Only the developers need to be recycled. I have seen that organization is new entrants companies in Telco (not the incumbants). I see you are a SAP manager so I guess you don't want big changes in your architecture. SAP should cover as much as possible of your IT... But even than, you're maybe not obliged to have the army of Netweaver or ABAP guys. It depends on what's around your SAP and how does SAP will support your business in the future... " r?f?rences :

Sport | Fun | Philosophie Last edited on Tuesday, October 23, 2007 at 13:18:31 pm. Globally 2006 has been a good year for me, both professionally and in my private life. I highlight here the major topics. WorkAs Solution Architect at HP Consulting & Integration, I continued to develop the architecture of one of our largest project at an Insurance Company. I did that in collaboration with senior architect colleagues and it has been very interesting for me. However, working on the same design for one year was a bit difficult for me. I need much more scope and context changes than that. In the mean time, we also won and delivered interesting missions in the SOA space where I believe I have continued to progress. Good thing: I received an award (a bottle of Champaign) for ?Excellence in Business Development?. Gradually, around July, I was getting bored with my job function. Also I had had phone calls from other companies wanting to know if I would be interested by some other opportunities. I started to think about it and I talked about it with my manager at HP. He proposed me another challenge. (I have to say that this manager, Herman Van Beirendonck is the best manager I have ever had until now). In November I became Client Principal for Fortis. My responsibility is to develop HP?s Consulting & Integration Business at Fortis. This change is a big change for me: I?m moving from the technical field to the sales field. I feel this is important because one day I wish to be more in control of some business - as a manager, or as owner ? and businesses have revenues and have costs. It?s probably more difficult to drive revenue than to make costs, so I believe in developing my selling skills, even if it?s not always where my heart is. I keep on reading the article ?Why decision-makers need to understand the technology? because it hurts my Engineer?s heart to see how people don?t care about how it (IT) works. It?s my MBA which tells me to look at the money side of things if I want to get where I want to get (higher). Only the future will tell me if this move was good for me or not. In anyway, it?s important to me to ?walk the talk?. I?ll be able to make a point on this career move at the end of 2007. (See also ?What?s Next?) Today, my priority is to be integrated into the Fortis/HP business and move from a backoffice function to a leading commercial position. TravelDiscovering the world is and will stay important to me. Of all the 5 senses, the vision is the best to me. I don?t need to talk or listen. It?s important to me to see. So we took the time and money to travel and see the world. We started with some very relaxing holidays in the Caribbean: the Dominican Republic. It?s all about Rest, Sun, Beach, Catamaran, Blue Ocean and all the other Rhum Coktails, Swimming Pool? All Inclusive. During the summer, we went to the sea side in Belgium. This is an excellent place for Thomas and he keeps asking when we will go back. 2006 was very warm year, so we had excellent weather conditions (even too hot some days). In September, we visited Rome. It was a very romantic trip and we had a good overview of the city in 3 days. I believe we will have to go back to complete the visit and, of course, for the shopping. In November, we had a small weekend in the north of France in Montreuil-sur-mer. We had a walk on the beach of Le Touquet and the weather was great: a good and relaxing moment also. In December, we had booked a Travel to Egypt (Cruise on the Nile) but we had to cancel it. It will be for next year? LeisureI have decided that Cycling is my primary sport (because I always want to try something else) and even if I?m not able to do as much as I would like, I think we didn?t do too bad.
We also had a Salsa course on Thursday evening for several weeks (10, I believe). It?s not so easy to learn Salsa after work because you need some concentration. But we could learn some nice combinations : Dile Que No, Enchufla, Enchufla double, Carnavale? Maybe it?s less than before but I still spend time watching TV and ? Belgacom TV has arrived to us! I?m very happy about that because I can learn with the new channels on History, Travel and Science and Thomas is quiet with Baby TV. All the year, I listened to Europe1. I love Europe1. InternetAs you may know, Internet is an important thing to me. I spend many hours writing my website and reading what?s on the web. 2006 was for me the year of RSS. I started to use RSS aggregators like RSS Bandit or Netvibes.com to make my own selection of the web. I have selected some blogs I like to read and I monitor them. These are mainly general, local and IT news sites. I complemented by some google Alerts on companies I watch like HP, Belgacom, Fortis, BEA, Microsoft, Documentum. I also have alerts on my favourite buzzwords like ECM, SOA, Int?lligence Economique (Competitive Intelligence) and MBA. At the beginning of the year I stopped using my PostNuke because I had been hacked (I had pornographic comments on my posts?). But I recently complemented by a Picture Blog and the use of Del.icio.us to build a personalize RSS stream. My favourite site is for the moment scoopeo.be. As a ?webmaster? I continued the development of Paul Leroy?s website. This year was the year of the L?gende Dor?e de St Geroges. So we advertised on the home page and than published pictures and even mp3 on eSnips.com. My feeling is that the Internet has found a second life these last months, with Web2.0. The Times magazine has elected YOU (the million of people who contribute to the WWW) as the Person of the year. So to some extend I must be 1/1000.000 of a person of the year. My main question about the coming back of the web, is that it?s maybe a second bubble. Free services are popping up again : for some time I could not find a place to upload files but now YouTube even encourages to post videos. Who pays for this ? I believe, this is only payable if Television over the Internet becomes a reality (think about France24), otherwise it might well be a second bubble. Let?s hope not because I like the web when it?s like that. Missing on the web2.0 : Big Companies. Most large companies don?t push content to the web (IBM is an exception). Even a good description of their products is often missing. Would more information and transparency kill their business model? Maybe, but consumers are now directly blogging on their products in real time so they?d better inform well using the same kind of communication means. Competitive Intelligence using the web is all about that. ConclusionTo summarize here is the 2006 score:
With a mean of 8/10, we can say it has been a good year, can?t we? Want to know what?s next? What's Next : 2007 and After Last edited on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 18:22:44 pm.

The KAOS ((Knowledge Acquisition in autOmated Specification) approach consists of a formal framework based on temporal logic and AI refinement techniques where all terms such as goal and state are consistently and rigorously defined. The main emphasis of KAOS is on the formal proof that the requirements match the goals that were defined for the envisioned system. KAOS is a way to implement "Goal Oriented Requirements Engineering". In that kind of software engineering, the desing is derived from the end user goals for using the software. This allows to make high quality design for which we are sure that they match the end user requirements "by construction". Objectiver represents the very first of a brand new type of requirements engineering tools. Based on a goal-oriented methodology, it aims at building high-grade requirement specifications Links

In Bizz Magazine this month, there is an article on Micro Management (see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micromanagement). I have met this kind of management in the past and I have really suffered from it. According to Bizz, Micro management can be caused by :
What can we deduce from this on the competences that do you need to be the manager ? My belief is that a company's added value is related to its technology. By technology I mean the foundations of the business: know-how, products, knowledge, technology, experience... A manager that doesn't master that "technology" (and works in a vertical business unit) is in a bad position: he doesn't know what needs to be done, where, how and why. In order to control the activities that he doesn't understand he needs more and more reporting and explanations. Its management style will probably become a micro management style. Of course a manager must be able to delegate and is not supposed to know all details on HOW tasks will be done. But in order to delegate you first need to know WHAT you delegate. This is where some basic techical competences are required. Therefore, from the micro-management definition, I can push my idea that a good manager must first of all be competent in the "technicality of the business". Micro-Managers are gangsters who managed to reach high positions by being political, opportunistic or by seducing the top management with buzzwords (ROI, Capitalize, Alignement, BLA BLA BLA with a nice smile). What about the so-called non-techical competences ? (By the way, is there any comptence that is not "technical" ?)
My belief is that the best managers know their industry and their technologies very well. Some examples ? Bill Gates (Microsoft), Larry Ellison (Oracle), Hasso Plattner (SAP). If you know counter examples send them to me by email (See Contact Information ). Send along a proof that they are successfull and why it's non-technical, of course. I'll put them on this page. There is only one clever way for a non-technical manager to be a good manager : empower his team and drive competences forward. Put the right people at the right place to drive revenue. This is what good CEOs do. They have the luxury that they don't need any business specific technical competences. It's a nice to have. Their only required technical competence is Business Portfolio Management (Show me the money!). They have to grow what's good for the company and cut what's dead. For the rest, they need a big EGO, a lot of political support and to negociate a golden parachute... Last edited on Saturday, June 17, 2006 at 0:10:14 am. Toujours autant marre du HTML... Last edited on Saturday, December 31, 2005 at 13:32:24 pm. A suivre...) Last edited on Thursday, February 02, 2006 at 22:59:56 pm.

if we want to maximize the usefulness of an eReader like a Tablet, it needs to support the largest number of applications. Let's have a look at the major options :
On the same line, there would be Linux based Tablets, but they don't have so many ready to go applications. For instance OpenOffice is still lagging a bit behind MS Office (personal opinion, of course). MS Windows based tablets would nevertheless still to face some challenges:

Recently I had a problem on my home computers. We couldn't connect to www.google.com anymore. A ping didn't work, a nslookup didn't work, a tracert didn't work. All other sites were ok. I searched the Internet (using google.be ;-)) and many people had the same problem. It seems to be a strange DNS problem. For those people, here is a temporary solution. Edit your Windows Hosts file (in c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) and add this line at the end: 216.239.59.147 www.google.com This way you tell your computer directly where to find Google.com. Note this solution will no longer work if Google.com changes its IP Address. After that I could again read my gmail, my Google Calendar, my Google Notebook and Blogger. Strange problem... I would like to know the real issue behind it. Today we did some mountain bike in Kasterlee/Herentals on the Montain Bike Routes of the Bloso.
I could not blog for several days because I couldn't connect to www.google.com due to very stange dns problems. Whatever, I would like to wish you the best for this end of the year. I hope your holydays are filled with happiness and good cheer ! Very soon I will send you my Best Wishes with my Best Shots 2008. I have seen that guy (Roxorloops) at Devoxx. What he does is amazing ! Last week (Dec 8-12 2008), there was Devoxx (formely known as JavaPolis) in the Metropolis in Antwerp. The fair usually welcomes 2000 developers for technical conferences on Java, PHP, JavaFX, Scala, Ruby on Rails... IBM invests on this event and this year Robin Mulkers proposed to demonstrate IBM's technology leadership with a real use case of one of the hottest technologies: RFID. The project was exlained in the keynote (see some photos here below)
Furthermore, it's a usefull use case for the Devoxx Organization : All participants receivedan RFID badge. Those badges were tracked so that one could for example see which sessions were the most popular. Or participants could leave their name at the booths by letting the hostess scan their badge to participate to games or request for more information. At IBM, we call this innovation that matters ! PS : Devoxx is one of the best events that I know. The organization is really great. You have free WiFi, you can take drinks directly from the fridge, speackers are accessible, topics are cool... Everything is in place to have a great Developer experience ! In the past I had already designed goal trees using UML. Today I have developed several diagrams for one of my customers : goal trees, project lists, opportunities, initiatives, execution strategies.... I have put it all in one huge diagram, that I have called a mind map. So I have effectively been developing a mind map using a UML Modeling tool. I can't show you because it's confidential but I find it quiet interesting and I will do it more and more. You can try it at home... This weekend I took some time to have a look at Ubuntu. I find Windows Vista is very slow and I wanted to know how Linux would run on my machine (Acer Aspire 5315, Intel Celeron 1.7 Ghz). I downloaded a CDRom from Ubuntu's website. You can boot from that CDRom and run Linux without making any changes to your machine. Directly, I was convinced by the performance : Linux is much more reactive. When applications are slow, the OS isn't and that makes all the difference. There are however some things that make me realize it would cost me time if I would completely switch to Ubuntu :
This Sunday (Nov 30, 2008) we were at the Lotto Arena in Antwerp for the last concert of Natalia's Glamorous Tour. It's the 4th time I see Natalia in concert. The first time was ok. The second time I was disappointed. The third time was ok but I still found she was shouting instead of singing. This time was ... exceptional : 1. She was singing and not shouting: real emotions could flow instead of a mass of decibels. 2. There was a real dance floor : Natalia and the dancers provided a superior experience. 3. There were nice surprises like singing Prince and the appearance of Stam van Samang. So it was an excellent concert this time !! ![]() Last edited on Monday, January 12, 2009 at 12:13:07 pm. I was doing my daily blog reading when I landed on Slideshare. On the right column there is a list on the most downloaded slide sets. I was attracted by a presentation on Critical Thinking. This is the conclusion :
Why bother with Critical Thinking ? "We are currently preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist, using technologies that haven't yet been invented, in order to solve problems we don't even know are problems yet" Last edited on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 11:46:18 am. Google faced to the fishermen's problem Google faces a lot of attacks from publishers to pay money for their supposedly non-authorized reuse of information. There is a intellectual honesty that needs to be re-established around this "copyright" question. When a company publishes something, it's means to give (or sell) it to the public. Can the public reuse that information once they access it ? Yes : they can at least talk about it. Now : what's the difference if Google takes it and talks about it on the web by indexing it and making it searchable ? If this information is not meant to be reused for free than why is it published and exposed without any serious protection ? This makes me think about the fishermen's crisis in France. The fishermen's real problem is not the oil price : it's the fact that their real cost of fish is not reflected in their prices. They sell at loss. Similarly if publishers have to claim money to Google it's because they just dumped their content on the web instead of finding ways to get something out of it from the start. Claiming money to Google shows the weakness of those companies' business models which are outdated. Links :

Business Architecture Last week I had a course on Business Architecture and it was fascinating. Not bad for us : we had a kind of private concert :-) Around 22:00, Kate Ryan was good (but not as good as Milk Inc). The tracks of her new album sounded good : promissing ? We will see. Visit of Nick Donofrio at IBM Belgium ![]() Yesterday, Nick Donofrio gave a session on innovation at IBM Belgium. I really had the feeling to be in front of a legend. For 44 years he has been working on the most innovative IBM projects : the transition to CMOS, the System/360, the RS6000... He has surfed all the important IT waves with style. Mr Donofrio will retire in October this year and he mainly emphasized on what makes IBM a great company :
Being global is an important topic for IBM, according to Nick Donofrio. And indeed IBM has lauched many initiatives around globalization:
To start and to finish his speech Mr Donofrio encouraged the IBMers to anticipate change and to use change as an opportunity. Or even better : create the change. He explained how his father created change for his family. He wanted the best for Nick and created the change by setting hard work as a mean to reach a better education level. (Was it a success ? Apparently yes.) The only explanation for this move was : "If nothing changes, nothing changes". Be an actor of change. And for IBM one of the current changes is... globalization. Make a Yahoo Pipe and publish it using PHP I really enjoy playing with the web and all the social tools. There is something that is quiet well advanced called Yahoo! Pipes. With Yahoo!Pipes you can reuse contents on the web and republish it in another form without programming. Look at the following. The following Pipe allows me to collect 4 feeds (different places where you can comment my posts) and republish it as once. To do that you drag & drop : - 4 "Fetch Feed" Sources : you have to give the URL of the rss feed - the "Union" Operator it merges the 4 feeds into 1 - the "Sort" Operator which allows to sort the new feed - by date descending for instance. You can see the result of this Pipe here : Comments There are much more drag&drops you can do. Check it out on Yahoo! Pipes by creating a new pipe.
Quelle libert? ! J'adore. Comment mieux dire ? merde ?

Twitter / Gtalk integration I have tested today the GTalk/Twitter integration. By sending an instant message to Twitter you can twitt and receive your friends twitts. It's really great : Twitter becomes a kind of broadcasting chat engine. It's a common trend that I have seen at IBM also. You can add a service - called a Bot- as one of your buddiesand ask him questions. It's the computer on the other side who talks to you. For example, at IBM we have a number of Instant Messaging bots available on Sametime to employees, including:
There is a technical article over here : Building your own Sametime bots. If you know some good bots for GTalk, MSN or Yahoo, please let me know. Architectural Thinkings I just completed a IBM course on Architectural Thinking. Here are the best quotes : "Every Solution to a problem introduces new problems" "At IBM, Architects must have a T-Shape" "IT Architecture is a set of decisions that you take which will cost you a lot of money if you change them afterwards" (Robin Mulkers) (In architecture,) "Good is good enough" CoComment test going on Still playing with technology. Europalia - Expositions ![]() Last weekend was cultural as we visited two Europalia expositions this sunday. We first went to the Mus?e d'Ixelles for an exposition called 'All ways lead to Rome" ("Tous les chemins m?nent ? Rome - Voyages d'artistes du XVIe au XIXe si?cles") We than went to the BOZAR for a second Europalia exposition called "Encompassing the Globe - Portugal and the World in the 16th and the 17th Centuries" which shows how the Portuguese have travelled the world : Africa, Asia, America. Visiting museums like this is also another way to enjoy Brussels. Les diff?rents sentiments : pourquoi ? Je vois dans mes statistiques web (feedburner) que beaucoup de personnes cherchent et trouvent l'histoire "Les diff?rents sentiments" sur mon site. This week, I have improved it with a second script in order to export the search into RSS. DownloadYou can find the 2 scripts here: PhpFavoritesDownload In order to run it you need to have a apache + php configured on your pc. Edit the script and change the path to your favorites folder. Search for this line. $favorites_folder="C:/Documents and Settings/declercj/Favorites"; Why Favorites.php ?Because I like to seach into my several hundreds (300 to 700) favorites. See here http://jfdeclercq.blogspot.com/2006/12/php-favorites-screenshot.html Why Favorites2rss.phpBecause I use Netvibes at my web start page. So I can put my own bookmarks into Netvibes as a rss feed. See for instance http://www.lowas.be/Book/Internet.xml See how netvibes looks like : http://jfdeclercq.blogspot.com/2006/12/my-netvibes-home-page.html FutureIt's possible I'll use Del.icio.us more and more, which will make the favorite search obsolete. Also the search in favorites should be integrated directly in the brower (like in Mozilla for instance). Last edited on Thursday, December 13, 2007 at 23:13:04 pm. Maybe I should read the blog rules firts but ok... I don't think I'll have problems with what I'm goin to write here...) IBM's strategy aims at helping businesses to become "On Demand". IBM CEO Sam Palmisano defines an on demand business as: An enterprise whose business processes - integrated end-to end across the company and with key partners, suppliers and customers - can respond with speed to any customer demand, market opportunity or external threat. The IBM Software and especially IBM's middelware can help companies to become "on demand". It's not easy but it's achieveable thanks to SOA and ILM. Yesterday I attended the Vlerick Winter Reunion and we had an excellent presentation by Bertrand Piccard. Bertrand Piccard is one of the two pilots of the first ever non-stop balloon flight around the world. It's difficult to summarize all the concepts that were explained yesterday. Here are the topics I have written down. In fact I agree with most of the ideas of Bertrand Piccard and I believe I have |
